Barbra Streisand has scored her seventh number one on the Official Album charts, fending off stiff competition from pop princess Britney Spears.

Music veteran Barbra’s Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway – her 35th studio album – went straight to the top of the charts after its release.

The coup also sees the 74-year-old singer become the second most successful solo female artist in relation to chart-topping albums in the UK behind Madonna, who has 12 number one albums to her name.

I love Broadway songs…and singing them as duets with these great actors was a complete joy! #BarbraENCORE

Britney released her ninth studio album Glory on the same day as Streisand’s new effort but didn’t quite manage to hit the top spot, coming in at number two.

This is the US music star’s fifth album that has managed to reach the second-best spot on the UK album charts.

Barbra and Britney pushed last week’s chart-topper Frank Ocean down into the third spot after his long-awaited album Blonde went straight to number one.

Over on the Official Singles Charts, Justin Bieber, Major Lazer and MO’s collaboration Cold Water has been knocked off the number one spot after five weeks reigning supreme.

The latest musical effort from the US DJ duo is currently top of the charts in the US and Australia.

The Chainsmokers told OfficialCharts.com: “Well this is awesome ’cause I (Alex) have a lot of family in the UK that don’t have a clue what I have been doing for the last 10 years so this will make waves during the holidays this year.

“But in all seriousness this is an amazing achievement for us. We are beyond grateful at all the support from our UK fans and radio stations; as a relatively new artist, it means a lot to us and gives us a lot of confidence in the music we have coming up!”

Cold Water has sunk down to number three, while Justin’s other single Let Me Love You with DJ Snake has remained in the second spot.
