Mercury Music Prize nominees The 1975 produced an audio-visual spectacular as the Apple Music Festival of free gigs continued in London.
The Manchester four-piece dipped into their back catalogue of EPs during a 90-minute set accompanied by an extravagant light show and geometrical stage furniture.
The band lost out to grime artist Skepta at the Mercury award show last week, with their second album – entitled I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it – on the shortlist.
It was something frontman Matt Healy made only fleeting reference to, thanking Skepta and saying only: “We didn’t win.”
The Roundhouse was filled with fans who applied for free tickets, while all 10 shows are being made available live on the internet to Apple Music members.
Before playing Me, Matt said: “Seeing as this is all online and that’s where we live now, let’s do one song where it’s us and you and no phones. Let’s make it 100% no phones and use our eyes and hearts and enjoy each other’s company.”
The band, who topped the UK and US album charts with their latest album, played hits including Love Me, Somebody Else and breakthrough single Chocolate.
The venue, which holds around 1,570 people, will also play host to acts including Britney Spears, former Take That singer Robbie Williams and DJ Calvin Harris during the festival’s 10-set run, which opened on Sunday with Sir Elton John.
The full line-up – marking the event’s 10th anniversary, having previously been known as the iTunes Festival – also features Tuesday’s headliner Alicia Keys, as well as Bastille, Chance The Rapper, Michael Buble and OneRepublic.
