Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo was sent off in spectacular fashion after a handball gaffe in the Champions League loss against his former club Barcelona on Wednesday night.
Here we take a look at the errors made by Pep Guardiola’s number one, whose signing was in no small part due to his ability with the ball at his feet, and saw England’s first choice Joe Hart join Torino on loan.
We think Joe might be eating his pasta with more of a smile on his face these days.
Nou Camp calamity
The most recent and possibly the most embarrassing of Bravo’s mistakes saw the goalkeeper come out of his area and miscue a pass straight to Barcelona’s Luis Suarez. Not a great first move.
Suarez immediately attempted a lob and Bravo’s instinctive jump to handle the shot was only ever going to result in a red card, leaving City with 10 men for most of the second half.
After the 4-0 loss at his former club, Guardiola said: “I’m sorry, until the last day of my career as a coach I will try to play from our goalkeeper.”
Dropping derby drama
Guardiola gave Bravo, a £17 million signing, his City debut in the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford, as the former Barcelona coach restarted his rivalry with Portuguese manager, Jose Mourinho.
With City 2-0 up, Bravo flapped at a free-kick and allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to halve the deficit before half-time. Fortunately for Claudio, no more goals were scored – phew.
Rooney reprieve
And in the same game, Bravo might have seen red and conceded a penalty as well when he showed neat footwork to dribble away from Ibrahimovic before a heavy touch tempted Wayne Rooney to go for the ball.
Bravo dived in, studs up, but avoided punishment as he touched the ball first. Just.
Debut difficulties
After impressing at the 2014 World Cup, the Chile goalkeeper left Real Sociedad for Barcelona.
Bravo made his Barca debut in a pre-season friendly versus Serie A side Napoli in Geneva, and while that’s a little less high-profile than a Manchester Derby debut, Bravo felt the pressure and was at fault for the only goal, fumbling a long-range shot from Napoliâs Swiss midfielder Blerim Dzemaili in a 1-0 defeat.
International incident
During Chile’s 2016 Copa America Centenario group clash, Miguel Camargo gave Panama a shock fifth minute lead after defender Gary Demel gifted the ball to Panama, and Camargo’s swerving shot caught Bravo off guard.
Bravo should have saved it, but didn’t. Luckily for him, Chile went on to win 4-2 anyway, and won the final against Argentina for the second year running.
Probably one of the easier mistakes to forget, then.
