The 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster have posthumously received the Freedom of the City of Liverpool.

Scrolls with the names of the victims were given to their families at the event in St George’s Hall.

The medals, used to denote the city’s “highest honour”, were awarded to all of the 96 victims as well as former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, his wife Marina, Professor Phil Scraton and the former Bishop of Liverpool.

Dalglish was in charge of Liverpool Football Club when the disaster, a fatal crush in the Leppings Lane stand of Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, occurred at a meeting with Nottingham Forest in the FA cup semi-final in April 1989.
