A stage adaptation of Cheers is kicking off a US-wide tour in the city where it was set.

Cheers On Stage – based on the hit TV show starring Ted Danson – officially opens next week at the Citi Performing Arts Centre Shubert Theatre in Boston.

The play is based on some of the most memorable moments of the celebrated programme’s first season.

It features familiar characters such as retired Red Sox pitcher and shameless lothario Sam Malone, pretentious waitress Diane Chambers, rotund barfly Norm Peterson and the rest of the regulars.

Some lucky members of the audience will be invited on stage to act as bar patrons.

The television series ran for 11 seasons from 1982 until 1993 and won 28 Emmys and six Golden Globes.
