Grime artist Skepta has been awarded the 25th Mercury Prize, beating off competition from favourite David Bowie.

The north London-born singer collected the award and the £25,000 prize for his fourth studio album Konnichiwa at the ceremony at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, London.

Skepta made the final six alongside the late Bowie, twice-nominated Laura Mvula, five-times-nominated Radiohead, The 1975 and Michael Kiwanuka.

They were whittled down from a list of 12 acts which included Bat For Lashes, Kano, The Comet Is Coming, Savages, Anohni and Jamie Woon.
