Sheridan Smith is set to reprise her role as Fanny Brice for a UK tour of hit musical Funny Girl.

The Royle Family actress took a leave of absence from her starring role in the West End show with stress and exhaustion in mid-May, returning almost two months later in July.

It came as Sheridan accused the press of “bullying” after accusations were made about her reaction to missing out on a TV Bafta.

The 35-year-old will return as Fanny Brice next year in several UK cities including Bristol, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Dublin.

Semi-biographical musical Funny Girl documents the life of US actress and comedienne Brice, who died in 1951.

Critics heaped praise on Sheridan for her portrayal of Brice, whose singing and comedic ability led to her rising from a Brooklyn musical hall singer to a Broadway star.

The show’s UK tour will begin in Manchester in February and end in Llandudno in July.
