Britney Spears was supposed to make her triumphant comeback at the MTV VMAs but unfortunately someone had the terrible idea to put her on stage after Beyonce.

Brit gave it her best shot as she performed her new track Make Me with G-Eazy and his track Me, Myself and I on stage.

She looked smoking hot, there were excellent dance moves and Britney even added in a raunchy crotch grab: it should have been excellent.

Except it followed this:

Just gonna bring this back for a hot sec 🔥 #VMAs https://t.co/k8XWfKhrEx

People predicted it from the minute Bey performed.

Beyonce giving us a whole experience and Britney's gonna come out dancing like this #VMAs pic.twitter.com/pEdyskF9yB

And unfortunately they were right.

I love Britney but this is like watching a 6th grade talent show after Beyonce. #VMAs

#VMAs: @britneyspears, at least you tried. It's impossible to follow that @Beyonce performance. pic.twitter.com/PmSfPWAoZj

Many thought it was unfair of MTV to schedule Britney then.

Dear MTV… That's shady AF putting Britney and her four dancers after that Beyonce concert #vmas

THE RUDEST THING I CAN THINK OF IS MAKING BRITNEY SPEARS PERFORM AFTER BEYONCE. MY GOD. WHO AT MTV HATES THAT WOMAN? #VMAs

Just caught myself whispering "leave Britney alone" while scrolling my Twitter feed #VMAs

The actual performance itself had some unexpected high points, like, was G-Eazy rejected by Britney live on stage when he tried to kiss her?

Upon further review, the replay confirms that, yes, he was curved. pic.twitter.com/QpnM9HSIcq

— Complex (@ComplexMag) August 29, 2016

Wait did G-Eazy really try to kiss Britney? #BritneyOnVMAs #VMAs pic.twitter.com/nOWQ42b2Op

G Eazy thought Britney was down to recreate the Madonna kiss! And she was like "nah!" Lmfao. #VMAs

Still it was clear that it was all the gorgeous ladies who were the real winners.

Beyonce. Rihanna. Ariana. Nicki. Britney.
Tonight's real winner is that it's all about women.#VMAs pic.twitter.com/JKLmemP2Sv
