This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield paid tribute to the programme’s late agony aunt as he collected the Best Daytime Show prize at the TV Choice Awards.

The star said Denise Robertson, who died earlier this year, would have thoroughly enjoyed the ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel in London.

He said: “I want to dedicate this this year to Denise Robertson.

“This was actually one of her favourite nights out so she would have loved this.”

Phillip and his co-host Holly Willoughby returned to the show on Monday morning after their summer break, but he said he saw no reason not to party.

“Obviously it was our first morning back today after the seven-week summer holidays but there’s no reason why we couldn’t get piccalilli on that dress and drink some tequilas for Denise,” he said.

Mary Berry collected the prize for Best Talent Show for The Great British Bake Off and recalled one of her favourite moments from the show.

Gesturing to comedian Jo Brand, she said: “One of the most amusing times I’ve ever had was when this lady here was asked on Comic Relief to make a cake and soften the butter.

“We all know how to soften butter, but you were in doubt.”

Wiggling her bottom, she continued: “She took the pack of butter, put it on a stool and did that.”
