The man who killed rock legend John Lennon has been denied parole for the ninth time. The New York State Board of Parole on Monday announced that Mark David Chapman, 61, will remain behind bars for at least two more years. He will be eligible to apply for parole again in 2018. Chapman shot the former Beatles star outside his Manhattan apartment in 1980. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in jail in 1981 after pleading guilty to second degree murder. Chapman told the parole board he now accepts that his crime was "premeditated, selfish and evil." They told him his release would "be incompatible with the welfare of society" and would "undermine respect for the law." In his 2014 parole hearing, Chapman told the board that he still gets letters about the pain he caused in his pursuit of notoriety. "I am sorry for causing that type of pain," he said. "I am sorry for being such an idiot and choosing the wrong way for glory."
