After a dull and dreary Super Sunday, Sky Sports’ Red Monday was sure to be a vast improvement. Liverpool, one of the brightest sides in the division thus far, took on the mighty Manchester United.

The excitement was unbearable, the tension building, and the goals SURELY on their way.

It did not begin well.

#Lfc very nervous tonight. New players not settling at all. #LIVMUN

There’s no way to spin this game. It was dire.

Waiting for a tweet from a tactics hipster saying this game is actually really absorbing #LIVMUN

Watford’s 1-0 bore-fest on Sunday was beginning to look like a blockbuster in comparison.

Bit poor so far. Makes you think that building this game up to be the biggest in the history of the universe was maybe unwarranted #LIVMUN

Many people retweeted this post, as you can see.

Rt if you're bored…. #LIVMUN

— Football Stuff (@FootbalIStuff) October 17, 2016

Quite frankly, we all had better things to do.

My son is so bored, he's just said that he's going to do his French homework. That's how dull this is #LIVMUN

Was Jose Mourinho to blame?

Not a pretty game. Mourinho won't mind. #lfc #mufc

— Sam Tighe (@stighefootball) October 17, 2016

Almost certainly, yes.

So Mourinho has so far made this precisely the game that he wanted. That's a small victory, of sorts.

Jose Boreinho?

Please… no analysis.

Might be a 14 minute ad break at half time. Not much to dissect so far #LIVMUN #Bus

The sarcasm was real.

Cannot contain my excitement watching this, just so thrilling #LIVMUN

— Noreen Khan (@DJNoreenKhan) October 17, 2016

The only real entertainment came from a string of fine David De Gea saves. We wanted goals, however.

David De Gea be like… #LIVMUNpic.twitter.com/iMSSJ9mfiv

Hacker T Dog had the right idea.

I've just had one of the best 90 minute sleeps of my life.#LIVMUN

— Hacker T Dog (@CBBC_Hacker) October 17, 2016

Apology not accepted, ESPN.

We're so sorry. #LIVMUN

— ESPN UK (@ESPNUK) October 17, 2016

The game ended 0-0. Goalless. Two clean sheets were earned.

David Baddiel might be onto something here.

It may be a law of football that the bigger the build-up, the more boring the game #LIVMUN

— David Baddiel (@Baddiel) October 17, 2016

Nobody say a word about next Sunday’s Chelsea v Manchester United game. Please.
