Justin Bieber and Rihanna have rounded off the first day of this year’s V Festival as the headline acts – and Beliebers went crazy for their idol’s performance.

The festival takes place across two sites, Weston Park in Staffordshire and Hylands Park in Chelmsford, over one weekend, with the line-ups trading locations for the second day.

Pop superstar Biebs was up first in Chelmsford, while Rihanna took on Staffordshire for the Saturday night show.

Biebs was the main event at V Festival (PA)

Justin reportedly arrived on site for the festival in a helicopter and was said to have ordered 800 gallons of purified water for his performances this weekend.

The Sorry singer, wearing a striped hoody, ran through tracks including Boyfriend, Baby, Love Yourself and Cold Water, and was rumoured to be planning a huge on-site party after his set.

Fans were pleased to see him do a rundown of many of the best moments from his Purpose tour.

He has had a tough week, seeming to remove his Instagram account after a spat with ex Selena Gomez over comments from his fans, known as Beliebers, about a photo of him with new girlfriend Sofia Richie.

He offered a cryptic comment towards the end of the set.

"You guys don't know how I feel – love wins." -Justin Bieber #VFestival

Rihanna arrived on stage in a long trench coat to guard against the cold weather as she belted out her hits.

Usually Rihanna’s a pretty big deal, but in the face of hordes of Beliebers, she took something of a back seat in terms of hype.

So jealous of people at V Festival! My bae Rihanna will smash it!

The festival has been blasted by high winds and pouring rain so far, with the weather proving so bad that Justin’s preceding act, Sia, was delayed on stage as the technical crew fought to make her stage set work around the wind.

Essex Police have made 12 arrests at Hylands Park during the festival so far and evicted 16 for offences relating to drugs, wristbands and assault, and Staffordshire Police are said to have made “several” arrests on suspicion of drug offences.
