He may be long retired, but the old rivalries still burn in Gary Neville.

The former Manchester United defender was – unfortunately for him – on hand to witness his old club play out a goalless draw at Liverpool in one of the dullest matches of the season last night.

It was a shocking spectacle on the field and, as this picture shows, things weren’t much better in the stands.

Yeah, that’s not exactly the intimidating reception you’d expect for a United manager at Anfield – especially when that manager is Jose Mourinho.

We can spot maybe one face in there looking vaguely unimpressed – the rest are all looking on in what appears to be awe at the arrival of the Special One.

Neville later said the tweet was not intended as a dig at Liverpool specifically, and more as a comment on the state of modern football.

It wasn't a dig at Liverpool actually. Its scary for all football . @premierleague @FA https://t.co/ZGSm3ioc5O

And fans definitely thought he had a point.

@GNev2 welcome to football in 2016. People more interested in filming the game, or filming themselves watching it!

@GNev2 was this whilst they were piping in 'you'll never walk alone' through the speakers to make it sound louder?
