Sony is doing a great job with its genre releases this year, following on from the sucess of The Shallows with heavier horror effort Don't Breathe.

The film just debuted in cinemas and brought down $28 million worldwide, with more than 26 million of that coming from the States. For a movie which cost less than 10 million dollars that's a great opening, especially considering how dark and violent the film is.

Don't Breathe should drag down plenty more dollars across the pond, and will also be arriving in Irish and UK cinemas on the 9th of September. It's a breathless (ha!) thriller with strong horror elements from Fede Alvarez, best known for the 2013 reimagining of Evil Dead. Which was pretty darn violent too.

The rest of the top 10 included Suicide Squad (which has over $600 million worldwide) and the marvellous Kubo and the Two Strings which has taken nearly 30 million dollars into its second week.

Sausage Party continues to impress in 4th place, earning close to 90 million already and the top five is rounded out by new release Mechanic: Resurrection starring Jason Statham which should do something in the 20 – 30 million range that's a perfectly acceptable return for one of his movies.
