Actress Mary Tyler Moore, famous for a television show of the same name, died Wednesday at age 80, her publicist said. Earlier Wednesday, media reported that Moore was gravely ill at a Connecticut hospital. Moore has been vocal about her battle with diabetes. She was first known for playing a perky suburban housewife on The Dick Van Dyke Show and then as a fledgling feminist on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The Mary Tyler Moore Show ran from 1970 to 1977, and was one of many shows produced by Moore and then-husband Grant Tinker. Other shows included The Bob Newhard Show, Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere and WKRP in Cincinnati. These series became known for their ensembles of fine dramatic and comic talent and quality writing. They appealed not only to critics, but to a more literate and sophisticated TV audience that rejected juvenile comedies and violent police melodramas. Moore credits his success to what she calls his unique understanding that "the secret to great TV content was freedom for its creators and performing artists."
