A Dog's Purpose is a new film that looks like a must for canine fans, especially those who suspect these furry guys and gals are the very best friends you can have.

Here's the trailer. This one might make you cry.

Perhaps unsuprisingly, this is based on a 2010 book of the same name by W. Bruce Cameron which was a New York Times bestseller for 49 weeks after its release. That book was described as a 'three hanky boo-hooer' in the press and the film seems to be following the same pattern, especially with the part of the tale inhabited by Dennis Quaid.

Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallstrom is at the helm and he's once again diving into the world of canines after 2009s Hachi, which was also a weeper. His other films include Chocolat, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and The Shipping News.

A Dog's Purpose is in cinemas in January, 2017.
