The film uses that at a jumping off point to examine how a new form of slavery has infected the black community ever since, in the growing epidemic of institutional incarceration and a systemic fear which has is maintained by the media.

It looks like strong material and comes from director Ana DuVernay, who most recently released the critically acclaimed Selma. The film was made in secret and was only recently officially announced. After screening at the New York Film Festival it will be on Netflix on the 7th of October, 2016.
